IS contaminated 'BLEED AIR' KILLING OFF AIRLINE PILOTS, Crew and affecting passengers?

Julian Bray writes: Lobby organisations claim that for years the aviation industry has been falsely reassuring the travelling public, flight attendants and pilots that the air you breath on board on airplanes is totally safe and there is nothing to worry about. Unfortunately some say that is not always the case.   The situation is so critical that some law firms are setting up specialist departments to tackle this issue and will seek to representing flight attendants, passengers and pilots who become ill allegedly after breathing contaminated air on airplanes during what is termed 'stinky socks fume events.'

Astonishingly ALL modern commercial jets (following on from the demise of the much lamented VC10 and with the exception of the 787 Dreamliner) rely upon air pulled in through the engines to provide pressurized air to the cabin. During flight high-temperature compressed air is bled off the engines and, after being cooled, is re-circulated throughout the cabin and flight deck. 


Pyrolized engine oil or hydraulic fluid may contaminate the air in these compressors. As a result of exposure to this contaminated air, airline workers along with airline passengers, may develop chronic health problems leading them to seek attention from health care providers. There is however a bright light on the horizon as the 787 Dreamliner uses an entirely different process which excludes bleed air.

Synthetic jet engine oil contains an organophosphate known as tricresyl phosphate (“TCP”), essentially a neurotoxin capable of damaging the central and peripheral nervous system.


Those exposed describe 'contaminated bleed air 'as smelling like "dirty socks", "bad cheese" or like a "gym locker room." But trying to nail the symptoms down, other say the injurious air does not smell at all!  So where do you go from here?  Some have described, a metallic taste that they experience during a "fume event." Others may have trouble breathing. The symptoms change depending on the severity of the event which plays into the hands of the airline operators. 

Any form of toxic cabin air, not only compromises the health of cabin crew and passengers, it also compromises flight operations and more importantly flight safety.  Senior Airline Pilots have in official reports described feeling groggy, or "out of it" or some claim spells of paralysis when breathing air laden with synthetic jet oil fumes. All seem to agree 'Fume Events' as they are known are dangerous.

Clearly the way forward is akin to the raft of exposures from the unfolding FIFA scandals. Contaminated Bleed Air episodes have traditionally been underreported, in an fiercely competitive industry where long term employment is always under revue. Too many complaints, upsets the bean counters, but clearly something is not working and for the sake of everyone who steps inside a modern aircraft (the Boeing 787 Dreamliner being the ONLY exception) these 'bleed air' issues need investigating. Just need to find a campaigning MP to take up the challenge....
