RMT "RAIL NORTH" PROTESTORS AGAINST CUTS TO DEMONSTRATE OUTSIDE CONSERVATIVE PARTY CONFERENCE IN MANCHESTER

RMT Union are planning a series of co ordinated demos during the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester starting on Sunday.....

This is the full 'uncut' Media Release from RMT:

"Rail North" cuts protestors to join major demo at Tory Conference on Sunday

RMT union protestors, fighting plans to axe jobs, services and safety on rail services across the North, will be joining the major demonstration at the Tory Party conference in Manchester this Sunday.

The union fight will be building support for the campaign to shine a light on the shadowy “Rail North” and will be exposing the lies and hype around George Osbornes “Northern Powerhouse” claims.

Britain’s largest rail union has said that the promises of a Northern Power House, set to be a major theme of the Tory Party Conference, has become a sick joke with thousands of skilled rail jobs and passenger safety under threat in the North.

OPEN LETTER TO BARBARA SLATER, DIRECTOR BBC SPORT: GOLF OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS FULL COVERAGE DECAMPS TO SKY SUBSCRIPTION TV ONE YEAR EARLY - NEXT YEAR!

Accepting this is more 'media' than 'aviation'  - but the excuse is an item of supreme interest in aviation and maritime circles, as Golf is the prime relaxation sport for these industries... Not good news though, so best be sitting down....

BBC coverage of The Open Championship

The BBC is announcing today that the R&A has agreed with our proposal to amend the broadcast arrangements for The Open Championship one year earlier than planned. From 2016 rather than 2017, the BBC’s coverage of The Open will take the form of extended peak time TV highlights, live radio and enhanced digital rights.

So why has the BBC taken this step and what does it mean for golf fans?

Much has been written and spoken recently about the BBC’s finances and its offering to licence fee payers. The funding agreement announced in the Chancellor’s July budget and the overview of the BBC’s future finances outlined in the Charter Review proposals make it clear that the BBC is faced with some challenging financial savings targets. Sport on the BBC is not immune to those pressures and they are compounded by the highly inflationary nature of the rights market.

VW fitted 11 million diesel vehicles with emissions spoofing software to foil test results

Volkswagen admitted today Tuesday,  some 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide could have the suspect software that has triggered a widening emissions scandal.

The German automaker VW said it will make a provision of 6.5 billion euros ($7.3 billion) in the third quarter following the revelations last week that it had misled authorities over the emissions of its diesel cars.

The company added that this provision was subject to revaluation and that it was working with the relevant authorities to clarify the irregularities in the software that recorded emissions in the carmaker's diesel engines.

Up to 11 million vehicles could be affected in the scandal, the German auto giant added.
Shares in Volkswagen dropped 20 percent in European trading on the news of the profit warning.

The scandal surrounding Volkswagen's emissions data has raised fears that damage may not be limited to the automaker. There could be another casualty: Germany's hard-won reputation for reliability, efficiency and trustworthiness is at stake.

PORKIESGATE: What did William Hague know about non-dom status?

Julian Bray Media aviastion Newslines 01733 345581
Revenge? Lord Ashcroft

The row over Lord Ashcroft’s tax status deepend last night as William Hague admitted he had not known about the non-dom tax status of the Tory party’s deputy chairman until some months ago.
If you missed BBC The World Tonight on March 2010 presented by Robin Lustig click this link for the full conversation.

Here is a taster:

Speakers: William Hague
                 Robin Lustig

RL: William Hague I need to ask you just one question about Michael Ashcroft. When did you learn that he had renegotiated the undertaking he gave to you about his tax status from permanent residency in the UK to long term residency in the UK?

WH: Well look David Cameron dealt with these issues yesterday. There were two things that people wanted to know about Michael Ashcroft, what undertaking he gave and what his tax status is now. And it’s high time the BBC now moved on to the real funding issue in Britain which is how come three quarters of the funding of then Labour party comes from trade unions, the huge power of the Unite union and these are now the issues that we need to get onto.

RL: But you gave an undertaking didn’t you, you gave an undertaking to Downing Street and to the scrutiny committee that Michael Ashcroft would become a permanent resident and that that would cost him tens of millions of pounds. It didn’t. When did you learn that that undertaking that you gave was not being adhered to?

Heathrow aircraft noise reduction plan may spread noise envelope over much wider area, says BALPA

London Heathrow Airport is to allow certain aircraft to increase the approach angle on finals as they near the runway as part of a noise reduction programme. UK pilots are however questioning how effective the trial change from the international standard of 3 degrees to 3.2 degrees is going to be measured.

The concerns are that this scheme could in some outlying areas possibly increase noise for Heathrow’s neighbours rather than reduce it. The steeper approach to Heathrow is different from the accepted standard around the world.

Pilots need to be aware of how the increased angle affects the handling of the aircraft and have to adapt flying technique to take this into account, according to  British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa).

Balpa stressed that flying a 3.2 degree approach path in a modern aircraft is not a problem in itself, as most are certified for approaches of more than this and pilots are more than capable of adjusting flying techniques to cater for it.  However when coming in to land, an aircraft must be at a specific height and speed and configured correctly when it reaches 1000ft above the airport. If it does not meet the criteria the landing must be abandoned, and a go around undertaken.

Balpa claims that adjustment to a steeper angle means an increase in the number of aircraft failing to meet the criteria and having to go around and begin the approach again resulting in more noise, more pollution and an increase in workload for both air traffic controllers and pilots.

Under the change parameters aircraft will need to slow down earlier in their preparation for landing. Balpa suggest that using speed brakes, lowering the undercarriage and using flaps to reduce speed could possibly increase the noise levels further out on the approach to the airport.

LIFETIME AIR TRAVEL BAN FOR THOSE WHO ARE DRUNK OR APPEAR TO BE DRUNK BEING CONSIDERED BY MINISTERS

As broadcast and discussed on BBC Scotland by Julian Bray the Aviation Expert, rowdy drunks or those who appear to be drunk and board an aircraft and found guilty of “air rage” could be banned from flying with domestic airlines FOR LIFE, under tough new plans reportedly being considered by the government.
Passengers who drink too much, may be prevented from boarding flights, while the number of drinks served mid-air could be cut under guidelines aimed at tackling a surge in bad behaviour on planes.  Ministers are considering sanctions including a blacklist that bars 'known drunk'  British passengers from flying with domestic carriers.

Passengers could also be routinely screened for alcohol and drugs  before they board, or stopped from buying drinks in airport terminals.

The new guidelines would take their lead from lifetime bans already imposed by some airlines, such as those handed this month by Jet2 to 14 passengers for abusive and aggressive behaviour on a flight between Glasgow and Tenerife and discussed by Julian Bray on BBC Scotland. Mr Bray suggested a life ban might be the answer to a growing drink problem amongst air passengers which could endanger the flight.

The Times reports tthe moves are a response to alarm among industry figures at a spike in reports of drunken disruption by passengers. A dossier prepared by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA),  ecords a rise in reports of passengers drinking their own booze, smoking in lavatories, assaulting cabin crew, fighting, using abusive language, damaging tray tables and stealing lifejackets.

CAA figures show that there have been 156 air rage incidents so far this year, the most since the late 1990s and up from 114 for the whole of 2014, 85 in 2013, 47 in 2012 and 39 in 2011.

Some of the increase could be because of better reporting, but many airlines need  the government to take decisive action.

A task force from the Department for Transport, CAA, UK Border Force, police, airlines and airports has been set up to address the issue, and new guidelines could reportedly be drawn up within months.

Airlines already have extensive powers to restrain and ban passengers – some foreign airlines have been known subdue drunken customers by seat-belting or even taping them to their chairs – so the clampdown is unlikely to require new legislation

Virgin plane's wing hit fence at New York's Kennedy Airport. Tug miscalculation blamed.

Virgin plane's wing hit fence at New York's Kennedy AirportVirgin plane's winglet wingtip  hit fence at New York's Kennedy Airport

A Virgin Atlantic flight VS 26 has been grounded at New York's John F Kennedy airport after its wing struck a fence before take-off.
The Heathrow-bound aircraft was being pushed back by an airside tug tractor from departure Gate 3 when its winglet wingtip struck a protective blast deflector fence around 8.30am local time.

No injuries were reported on the London-bound flight with 276 people on board, according to Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport.
Coleman said the airliner was being pushed back from Gate 3 at Terminal 4 when the wing struck the blast fence.

Virgin Atlantic said in a statement that the airline is working to arrange alternative flights for passengers as soon as possible.

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said the crash was a cause of “a miscalculation by the tug.”
“The VS26 departing from JFK to London Heathrow today returned to the gate after a miscalculation by the tug caused minor damage to one of its wing tips. All customers have disembarked the aircraft and our teams are working hard to get our customers on their way as soon as possible. Safety is our number one priority and we would like to apologize for the delay and any inconvenience caused.”
Port Authority says no passengers were injured in the crash. The passengers disembarked the plane and boarded a bus back to  the terminal, according to the Port Authority.

A spokeswoman for Virgin Atlantic told Sky News all customers were being booked on to other flights to Heathrow.

She said there had been "minor damage" to a wing tip 'winglet' and the aircraft is due to fly back to London later.  However it will be a dead leg "positioning flight" with no passengers on board.
