Air Canada Boeing 777-300ER (flight AC088) from Shanghai to Toronto forced to land in Calgary after experiencing severe turbulence, two dozen passengers injured and others badly shaken

An Air Canada Boeing 777-300ER on flight AC088 from Shanghai to Toronto was forced to land in Calgary after experiencing severe turbulence possibly 'clear air' turbulence, that left some two dozen people injured and others badly shaken. The aircraft "suddenly dropped several thousand feet" overhead luggage bins flew open and oxygen masks down. Drink cans, blankets and neck pillows flew around the cabin, anything that wasn't bolted down was on the move.  Passengers should have been strapped in (as the Fasten Seat Belts sign was illuminated) but some just chose to have them loosely buckled up or not at all.

The Flight AC088, en route to Toronto from Shanghai, was diverted to Calgary due to turbulence where it safely landed at 15:23 MT (17:23 ET) today. The Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members.

“I would like to acknowledge the flight crew of AC088 whose care and professionalism has been recognized by other passengers and I would like to thank our employees on the ground in Calgary and at other stations for their important contributions in response.

I would also like to thank the various agencies in Calgary who responded to this incident quickly and professionally. Their actions in helping us take care of our customers is deeply appreciated. We are grateful that the first passengers are already being released from hospital.”

Flight AC088, en route to Toronto from Shanghai, was diverted to Calgary due to turbulence where it landed without incident at 15:23 MT (17:23 ET) today. The Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 332 passengers and 19 crew members.

Passengers and crew were immediately met by Air Canada teams and examined by medical personnel.  Twenty-one passengers were transferred directly to local hospitals from the airport comprising eight with non-life threatening injuries and 13 for observation.

Air Canada is making arrangements to accommodate all passengers including those continuing on to Toronto.

Air Canada is cooperating fully with the Transportation Safety Board in its investigation of this incident

CAMBRIDGE GEARS UP FOR LOCAL TV USING OLD ANALOGUE TRANSMITTER, BUT USING DTT DIGITAL

Ofcom awarded licence to run local TV services in Cambridge on digital terrestrial TV (DTT).

The award follows legislation enabling Ofcom to issue local TV licences. Cambridge is one of 30 towns in Britain chosen by the government to host local TV channels, using the old analogue TV transmitters for new, localised channels on Freeview. The channel will be broadcast on DTT by the local multiplex, a discrete amount of spectrum reserved for local TV broadcasting on DTT.

Peterborough wasn't in the initial roll out, and could ONLY provide a local TV service if a new multiplex [MUX] was installed and paid for, and approved. this has to be following a joint submission by Comux ( who provide the MUX ) with the intending broadcaster. The bid would then be ratified by Ofcom. Clearly substantive up-front financial investment is required along with a willingness of Comux to extend its own transmitter footprint.

The licence awarded to: Cambridge:

Cambridge TV is the new Ofcom-licensed channel for Cambridge, launching in 2015 on Freeview channel 8, Virgin Media and online.

The firm says they're creating television that makes you think, highlighting the best in Cambridge arts, science, business and culture for bright, curious viewers locally and around the world.

In Cambridge we have a unique opportunity to provide high quality, intelligent TV which is of interest to local inhabitants and to a much wider audience on the web.

Cambridge offers access to a world-leading community of experts, researchers and innovators in every field, giving Cambridge TV a brand that’s recognised internationally. Let’s use it to tell Cambridge’s amazing stories to the global online audience.

What is Cambridge TV>

1: Who can see Cambridge TV?

⁃ On the internet, everyone can see Cambridge TV, so that’s our most important broadcast medium!

⁃ On Freeview and Virgin Media, our footprint extends in a big circle around Cambridge, from Ely to the Shelfords, north to south, and from Madingley to Fulbourn, west to east. It may be possible to receive Cambridge TV further afield than that.

2: How do I tune in on Freeview?
⁃ You may need to retune to watch Cambridge TV. After launch, you can follow the
Digital UK guide to retuning.

3: What’s the idea behind local TV?
⁃ Cambridge is one of 30 towns in Britain chosen by the government to host local TV channels, using the old analogue TV transmitters for new, localised channels on Freeview. Ofcom invited applications in two phases, and Cambridge Presents Ltd was successful in applying for the Cambridge licence in October 2013. The initial licenses are for 12 years and can be extended.

⁃ For more information about other local TV around the UK, see the Local TV Network website.

4: Who’s paying for it?
⁃ We have private investment and a contribution from the licence fee in exchange for sharing news content with the BBC

5: Are you related to BBC Cambridgeshire?
⁃ We share news stories with BBC Cambridgeshire, for possible use on TV or radio. The News Content Deal is arranged through the BBC Trust

6: How do I get involved?
⁃ There are lots of ways to get involved at every level: professionally, commercially, as a volunteer…
see our Get Involved section for details. The Cambridge TV studio is just off Newmarket Road.

Red ' DANGER TO LIFE' flood warnings issued by UK Met Office. Rain, on rain, on rain plus STORM due on Tuesday!

YORK & CALDERDALE FLOODING: BBC LOCAL RADIO EMERGENCY BROADCASTS

An earlier flood event in Whalley, Lancashire
A duck boat was used on the Thames to rescue people after the river burst its banks.
A year ago: The ramshackle, make-do-and-mend nature of flood rescue efforts in the Thames-side village of Wraysbury became apparent when a distinctive yellow amphibian tourist boat was halted by a cry for help from an inundated house.
Perhaps COBRA could co-opt a few DUKWs ?
UK Flooding map 27 December 2015 Orange denotes major flood alerts.
Red a suggests life threatening event

Julian Bray writes: In Lancashire, England some 5 inches of rain is set to fall over the next few hours on already saturated ground. Local rivers have burst their banks.  The UK Met Office has issued the highest level RED 'DANGER TO LIFE' flood warnings. This is unprecedented.

More than two hundred flood alerts and warnings have been issued covering North West England, Scotland and Wales, seven severe warnings in Lancashire alone. To add to the misery, a new major storm system, adding storm force winds to heavy downpours is also on its way and expected to impact region on Tuesday

Live television news footage this morning from the village of Whalley (at 9am Boxing Day) shows that within a space of 20 minutes, water levels have physically risen, and now entering already flood damaged (from recent previous events) rows of terraced houses. This is the third time they have been severely flooded in a space of three weeks.

Unlike previous incidents, the Army has been deployed early in Cumbria, setting up some 85% of the UKs' available stock of temporary flood barriers, and thousands of sandbags put in place. Slow backbreaking work as they have been working though the night. Inflatable boats and high axle military transports are also in place, and in places an evacuation of residents already underway.

Front door temporary flood boards are proving to be useless, as residents say floodwater and effluent is seeping up through floor boards and through unprotected back doors...   More than 200 flood alerts and warnings have been issued in North West England, Scotland and Wales, with seven severe warnings in Lancashire.

The Met Office has now issued a red warning of rain - the highest level - for parts of Lancashire. Motorists are advised to move their vehicle to high ground and generally not to travel through flood water as this creates a series of  'tidal waves' which easily overflow  or overtop temporary flood barriers.

As one elderly resident being rescued by the Army said: "By all accounts if you wish to experience 'living hell' we are truly at the gateway..."

ROUGH SLEEPERS ENTERS STRIKE DAY TWO: SERCO CALEDONIAN SLEEPERS RMT MEMBERS STRIKE 100% SOLID says UNION

As Caledonian Sleeper strike enters second day RMT Union  that over £5 million of public funding was 'lavished' on consultants and the tendering process by the Scottish Government

In a 'festive' Christmas message the RMT Union describes its current Industrial action on the London -Scotland spun off sleeper service as "a rock solid 48 hour strike on the Serco Caledonian Sleeper entering its second day and that RMT has revealed more than £5 million was blown on consultancy and tendering costs before the contract was let back in March - money the Union says that could have been spent on rectifying the serious safety faults at the heart of the dispute.

SHARM EK SHEIKH AIRLINE CANCELLATIONS NOW EXTENDED TO MARCH 2016 AT THE EARLIEST

As suggested by Julian Bray Aviation Security Expert, on several television and radio news channels that Sharm el Sheikh has still not resolved basic airport security problems and the region poses a continuing terrorist threat for foreign holidaymakers.

Thomson Airways has now formally confirmed, and extended its cancellation of all flights to Sharm el-Sheikh until at least March 2016, suggesting British holidaymakers will not return to the Egyptian resort for several months.

The problem with Sharm-el-Sheikh is simply that it is a resort surrounded by several very active conflict zones. Arms and ammunition are easily available in the region, and organised security to protect holidaymakers is 'not constant' according to locals.

The UK government suspended flights to Sharm on 4 November after an Airbus 321 operated by Russian airline Metrojet crashed, killing 224 people. Islamic State jihadis claimed responsibility for bombing the jet.

More than 16,000 Britons stranded in the area were brought home on a series of rescue flights amid heightened security.

No flights have operated between the UK and Sharm since 17 November because the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is advising against all but essential travel using the Red Sea resort’s airport.

UK FAMILY GROUP HAD USA VISAS REVOKED AT GATWICK AIRSIDE GATE

Julian Bray aviation security expert writes: A family group said to comprise 11 children and 2 adult males,  from Walthamstow London, England, has been 'denied boarding' a flight to the USA out of Gatwick.  The incident will fill the newpapers, but is this unusual?   The local MP chose to highlight the problem in The Guardian newspaper, a few days after the actual event, it's now caused a media storm, the group claim to have been singled out as Muslims.

But it now transpires one of the party was previously denied entry to Israel,  and others allegedly had published some unwise remarks on social media,  although this is strongly denied by the group.

Your country of origin or birth is apparently also a factor.  One of the 2 males is said to be from Pakistan.  And for reasons not made clear no adult females/ wives/mums are part of what has been termed by the media "a Muslim family."

Like anyone travelling to and hoping to be admitted to the USA they would be subjected to several forms of covert and public admissibility profiling.  #

If any of some sixty different parameters ( all published ) are breached or simply not met, then any existing visa or entry consideration is immediately cancelled, withdrawn and declared null and void. No reason may be given.  No matter how much the individual may have already paid out . And most travel insurance policies spell this out very clearly.

No valid travel documents, no insurance pay out. This is the gamble unwittingly encountered by any traveller to the USA.

The Norwegian airline is said to be 'not minded to return the contracted £9,000 worth of air travel, paid by the group, as it is not the airlines concern, but has always been the passengers individual responsibility to ensure the passport and any attached visa offered is valid AT THE POINT OF DEPARTURE, not at the airport airside final gate...

Had the airline flown the group to the USA, and then the passengers denied entry, the airline would have to return the group, at the airlines expense.

Mohammed Zahid Mahmood, from Walthamstow, eight members of his family, together with other children checked in on Tuesday for the Norwegian Airlines flight to Los Angeles.

They claim to have had previously obtained travel authorisation under the new electronic Visa programme. This replaces the old Visa waiver system which has served the USA and its visitors well for many decades, but clearly not supplied the US border staff with sufficient electronic data ready information.

The US authorities claim they admit after checks and visa restrictions around a million visitors a day.

The group claims they were denied boarding as an official in the USA based in Washington had telephoned or emailed the departure gate in Gatwick, to clarify the current visa status of the group.

Clearly passenger loading lists had been sent electronically by the airline to the USA, as a condition of carriage, these instantly are compared by computer to the 'denied boarding or visa 'status not clear' computer based filtering programs.

At the boarding gate Mr Mahmood said they were told they could not travel, but no reason given. As security issues are claimed to be involved no reason would be given. Its a case of your security profile does not fit you will lose out.
The family say their visas were approved more than a month ago and that they were travelling to see Mr Mahmood’s brother in Los Angeles.

‘”We checked in, there were no problems,” Mr Mahmood told the BBC. “Just before the final check we were singled out.

“Border control came and said ‘Can we have your passports?’. He asked us to distinguish between my brother’s children and my children.

“Then he came back and said, ‘I’m sorry you can’t board this flight. We received a call from Washington DC that we can’t allow this family to board the flight’.”

Mr Mahmood said he had educated his children “to live in this country peacefully” and had been invited to speak at local schools about Islamophobia.

He said he had once been detained for eight days at Tel Aviv airport.

“No-one is taking the blame. We are just going round in circles. It’s about £8,000-£9,000 we’ve spent on tickets.”

A spokesperson for Norwegian Airlines said: “We can confirm that a group of passengers were denied the right to board a flight from London Gatwick to Los Angeles yesterday at the request of US Homeland security. Norwegian fully complies with requests from the border controls of each country we serve.”

Clearly if anyone is paying out in advance, and holding a current visa. It is still not a guarantee that at the point of departure entry into the USA will be authorised...

DRONE REGULATIONS TAKE FLIGHT IN THE USA: FAA NEWS RELEASE

FAA logo

Press Release

For Immediate Release
Date: December 21, 2015

WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) new web-based registration system for small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) is now active.  Hobbyists and recreational users who fly UAS, which include remote controlled aircraft, may register at www.faa.gov/uas/registration.

Owners must register small UAS weighing more than 0.55 pounds (250 grams) and less than 55 pounds (approx. 25 kilograms) if they are to be flown outdoors for hobby or recreation.  Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx and FAA Deputy Administrator Mike Whitaker announced the rule requiring registration earlier this month.

Aircraft operated by the current owner before Dec. 21, 2015 must be registered no later than Feb. 19, 2016.  For all others, registration is required prior to the first outdoor flight.  Owners must provide their complete name, physical address, mailing address (if different), and a valid email address to register.

Federal law requires a $5 registration fee that will be collected at the time of registration via credit card.  To encourage speedy compliance, the FAA is making the process free for the first 30 days.  (The registration website will initially charge the owner’s credit card $5, but a refund credit will appear shortly afterward.)

After completing registration, owners will receive a personal registration number.  If a person owns more than one small UAS, each aircraft must be marked with that number.  Any method may be used to mark the UAS, as long as the number is legible.  Registrants may put the number in the battery compartment if it is easily accessible.

The FAA will immediately email a certificate containing the holder’s name, registration number, and the dates of issuance and expiration.  The operator must keep either a printed or electronic version of this certificate on hand for inspection as proof of registration.  Registration must be renewed every three years. If assistance is needed with registration, email UAShelp@faa.gov.

The full rule can be viewed here: http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/media/20151213_IFR.pdf.
