|Says it all really....|
During a Westminster Hall debate on Airport Expansion in East Anglia on Jan 12 2016, the Transport Minister Robert Goodwill in response to an intervention by Stewart Jackson claimed that "most aircraft flying today are some 25 years old....." This will of course come as a shock to Ryanair and British Airways and many other major carriers, who have invested heavily in new generation aircraft and in any case where the few aircraft serving East Anglia are 25 years old, the mechanical parts are routinely swapped out, so much of the aircraft will be generally younger than the original airframe..
They may wish to get a Hansard copy of the debate, as I fear a shoal of letters and emails may just soon be clogging up the Ministers inbox..
Clearly the Minister was not enjoying his experience as gaping holes in the Government airport policy (even references to the dim distant Maplin Sands project) and that of runway expansion, was given an airing.
The Minister fell back on a mind bending list of statistics, which didn't point to government investment but underlined how much was being invested by the new breed of Airport operators, and it was all too clear that the Minister hadn't actually read and understood the script before delivering it. He stumbled over words, and made several repeats.
The Stewart Jackson (MP for Peterborough) intervention was to put on record that new generation aircraft were much quieter and more fuel efficient and better for the environment generally. The only drawback was that through most of the debate Mr Jackson head down was furiously tapping away at his new tablet computer.... we have eyes everywhere Mr Jackson!
