CAA AEROMEDICAL CENTRE TO CLOSE DOWN ON FEBRUARY 28th -BUT OTHER (RESTRICTED SERVICE) AEROMEDICAL EXAMINERS ARE AVAILABLE

Although the CAA aeromedical centre is closing down other aeromedical examiners are available on the CAA Database.
Our picture shows the Royal Flying Doctor Service Exhibition unit (in Australia!)

THE CAA Medical Centre at Gatwick is closing down on February 28th, as the CAA claim there are enough Aeromedical Examiners on their database distributed throughout the country and at other airports who can undertake the required medical examinations locally.

However new or initial medical examinations / certificates for Class1 and Class 3 can only be completed at an Aeromedical Centre (AeMC):

To Find an AeMC:

All current AeMCs are listed below.

1:  London AeMC, 22 Upper Wimpole Street, London W1G 6NB (email: reception@amsgatwick.com or call 01293 77533601293 775336)

2: Aviation Medical Services: Horley, Surrey

3 & 4 NATS Aeromedical Centre (Swanwick, Hampshire and Prestwick, Ayrshire)  NOTE: NATS are not currently carrying out initial Class 1 medical examinations.

So effectively for INITIAL (ie NEW) CLASS ONE MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS you now only have 2 locations:

Central London and Horley Surrey, as CAA Gatwick is closing down at the end of February 2016.

The database link is:

A medical certificate can be revalidated before it expires or renewed after it has expired.

Revalidation and renewal examinations should take less time than those required for initial issue and they may not require all the additional tests. This depends on when the last test was carried out, the type of certificate held and your age at examination.

Revalidation

You can revalidate a Class 1 medical certificate by taking a revalidation examination at an Aeromedical Centre (AeMC) or by appointment with an Aeromedical Examiner (AME).

Find an AME

You can take your revalidation examination up to 45 days before your certificate’s expiry date.

Expiry date for revalidated certificates

When you revalidate a medical certificate, the validity period following revalidation will be calculated from its original expiry date.

Renewal

If you do not get your certificate revalidated in the 45 days leading up to its expiry date, you will need to have it renewed.

You can renew a Class 1 medical certificate by taking a renewal examination at an Aeromedical Centre (AeMC) or by appointment with an Aeromedical Examiner (AME), subject to the following conditions:
  • If your certificate expired more than 2 years before your attempt to renew it, the examiner will need to assess your aero-medical records before carrying out the renewal examination
  • If your certificate expired more than 5 years before then you will have to follow the same process as for initial issue.

Expiry date for renewed certificates

The expiry date is calculated from the date of your renewal examination.
