|Firefighter Jassim Essa Al-Baloushi died|
LATEST: A Dubai firefighter has died, (identified as Jassim Essa Al-Baloushi), the Dubai government said he died "saving the lives of others." Airport fire crews were attempting to control the initial fire and smoke outbreak on the crashed Emirates Boeing 777.
Some passengers caught on video said to have delayed the '90 second' emergency evacuation, just as they did on a striken BA 777 at Las Vegas, by stopping to retrieve their carry on luggage, held in the enlarged 777 overhead lockers, within the passenger cabin. Cabin crew can be clearly heard telling passengers to leave the luggage behind and evacuate...
Local media reporting some 24 British passport holders on board, including 4 N. Ireland passport holders, said to be on the passenger list.
Operator Dubai Airports said all arrivals and departures at the twin runway Dubai International suspended until further notice.
The live arrivals page on Dubai Airports' website confirmed no flights arrived or landed at any of the airport's three terminals since the time of the incident at 0845 GMT.
According to air traffic control message logs cited by Aviation Herald, a respected information website on air accidents, controllers at Dubai ( possibly having visually seen the landing gear was not engaged in the locked down position ), reminded the crew of the Boeing 777, to lower the landing gear as it came into approach.
The crew then announced they were aborting to "go around," a routine procedure for which pilots are well trained, but the aircraft failed to lift to 4,000 ft and came to rest more a 'belly flop' near the end of the runway instead...
Simply, there was no immediate confirmation on whether the landing gear was extended and locked when the aircraft touched the ground. Pictures and video snips suggest it is unlikely.
Emirates flight EK 521 from Thiruvananthapuram ( India ) with 282 passengers and 18 crew on board has 'belly-flopped' emergency 'crash' landed on arrival at (R12L) Dubai Airport, one of the worlds busiest airports.
Julian Bray Aviation Expert writes: Initial photographs, video and eyewitness reports suggest the landing wheel sets failed to deploy, and a possible unconfirmed 'explosion' and/or brake fire on landing has taken place.
An Indian media source claims the pilot informed passengers they were having problems with the landing gear, possibly 'not locking in the deployed down position' for landing and that an 'emergency landing' would be made.
Other reports suggest this was a second attempted landing and that the pilot had undertaken a 'go- around' to try and resolve a 'technical problem' with the landing gear. It now appears that was the intention, but the aircraft didn't complete the 'go-around' but just slid along the end of the runway..
Terrorist related activity has not been totally ruled out although Emirates would only confirm that their relatively new 'fly-by-wire' Boeing 777 Dreamliner has been involved in an 'accident.'
Reportedly a windshear 'turbulence' warning for Dubai Airport was also active, and this may have flipped over some of the deployed emergency escape chutes.
The aircraft now engulfed in smoke and flames is on Dubai Runway 12 Left, near Terminal 3. Emergency fire response teams are all attending.
THIS IS A MAJOR INCIDENT.
The airport is currently closed to incoming and outbound flights.
All 282 passengers and crew evacuated via chutes and over wing exits. No injuries reported but this could change.
Some passengers are also said to have delayed the emergency evacuation by stopping to retrieve their carry on luggage held in overhead lockers within the passenger cabin.
This is not the first time Boeing 777 passengers have delayed an emergency evacuation, it also happened at Las Vegas when a British Airways 777 caught fire, the Captain and Crew were praised for getting everyone off in record time but still passengers were filmed pulling their wheelie carry-on cases behind them.
Major recovery operation in progress. Local media reporting some 24 British passport holders on board including 4 N.Ireland passport holders, said to be on the passenger list.
The official air accident investigation has already started, and until the official report is released, all media speculation and comment is just speculative elements that might be considered by the official enquiry team.
